ACTION: Tell GOP Reps to vote against gutting the Office of Congressional Ethics

In a secret meeting and a secret vote Monday night, the House GOP caucus voted 119 to 74 to effectively kill the Office of Congressional Ethics. The move would take away the office's independence and roll it under the far less accountable Committee on Ethics. It would handcuff the committee by imposing gag rules and other restrictive measures. It is a disgrace for any democracy.

Under House rules, this GOP proposal will be rolled under a broader rules package which will likely fall under a party-line vote. This is why contacting REPUBLICAN members of the Illinois delegation is so important.

Please take 10 minutes today and call all Republican members of the Illinois delegation and tell them this move is shameful and they should oppose it. Even if you're not a constitunet, their vote on this affects YOU.

CALL SCRIPT: Hello, my name is __________ and I am an Illinois resident. I saw on the news the House GOP caucus voted to essentially kill the Office of Congressional Ethics and the vote was 119 to 74. How did Rep. X vote?

[Mark down answer and send to info@actionforabettertomorrow.org...if staffer stalls or says they don't know, ask when the vote will be released.]

I want the Congressman to know that this move is a disgrace. Republicans and Democrats are outraged, and I hope he votes against the measure. Thank you.

[Don't hang up until the staffer takes down your name/location]

Support Senator Durbin's Dreamer Bill

According to POLITICO, "Sens. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) are promoting the so-called Bridge Act, which would allow at least 740,000 young immigrants who have gotten deportation reprieves and work permits under Obama to keep those benefits for three more years if they are revoked."

The bill "would extend key legal protections and work permits to a select group of young undocumented immigrants brought here as children — a status that’s threatened by Donald Trump’s campaign pledge to repeal President Barack Obama’s executive actions to enact those benefits."

You can be sure that Senator Durbin is receiving criticism from anti-immigrant forces for his stance. Please contact Senator Durbin's office and let him know you have his back and will work to secure co-sponsors in the new Congress:

CALL SCRIPT:  Hello, my name is __________ and I am Senator Durbin's constituent. I am calling to let him know how pleased I was to hear of his bill, the Bridge Act. It is so important that we begin now fighting against attempts to roll back the progress we've made on immigration. I want to let the Senator know that I will fight hard to help him secure co-sponsors when the new Congress is sworn in. Keep up the fight! Thank you.

Write a thank you note to President Obama

The news is breaking fast on all fronts on the issue of Russian attempts to influence the 2016 presidential election. As Daily Kos reports, "on Monday, 10 members of the Electoral College—nine Democrats and one Republican—sent a letter to the Director of National Intelligence to request a briefing on “whether there are ongoing investigations into ties between Donald Trump, his campaign or associates, and Russian government interference in the election.”" The Clinton campaign is supporting that call

On the congressional front, Senators Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and John McCain (R-AZ) have demanded a congressional investigation. Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has also voiced support for a congressional investigation (but not a special committee).

WE NEED TO DETERMINE WHERE MEMBERS OF THE ILLINOIS DELEGATION STAND ON THE MATTER. PLEASE CONTACT YOUR REPRESENTATIVE AND ASK IF THEY SUPPORT SUCH A CONGRESSIONAL INVESTIGATION (for now, our campaign is focused on members of the house of Representatives as we await a response from Senator Durbin, Senator Kirk and Senator-elect Duckworth)

CALL SCRIPT:  Hello, my name is _________ and I am a constituent calling to ask about Represenative ____'s position on a critically important matter. Many Democratic & Republican Senators have called for a bipartisan investigation in both chambers of Russia's interference in the 2016 election. In the House, Rep. Swalwell, Ranking Member of the CIA Subcommittee of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, and Rep. Cummings , the Ranking Member of the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, have introduced the Protecting Our Democracy Act to establish the National Commission on Foreign Interference in the 2016 Election. Does Representative ____ support an investigation into Russian interference in the election? Specifically, do they support the Swalwell/Cummings bill?

CLICK HERE TO GO TO OUR PAGE WITH PHONE NUMBERS FOR YOUR REPRESENTATIVE. DON'T KNOW WHO IT IS? USE THIS LOOKUP TOOL.

NOTES:

  • In case you're asked which Republicans support an investigation, it's Senators McCain (R-AZ), Graham (R-SC), Lankford (R-OK), Corker (R-TN), Paul (R-KY) and McConnell (R-KY - the Senate Majority Leader). [source]
  • In case you're asked the bill number, it's H.R. 6447. [source]
  • Make sure the staffer takes down your name, location and contact information and request a formal response via email or letter.

Get your representative on record: Do they support a congressional investigation of Russia's interference in the 2016 election?

Unlike petitions or Facebook comments, letters sent to the White House actually get read. Each day, the Director of Presidential Correspondence chooses ten letters to be read by President Obama.

As President Obama's second term comes to a close, it's important that we contact him regarding the impact his presidency has had on our lives. Especially now, with so much negativity in the transition, it becomes more important to take a moment and reflect on the progress that we've made over the last eight years as we gear up for the fight to protect that progress in the new year.

Fight Gov. Rauner's bad appointment for Port District Board

Republican party operative? Check. Scandalous past? Check. Trump supporter? Check. Governor Rauner has picked Aaron Del Mar to sit on the Illinois International Port District’s board. He'll make $20,000 a year for sitting on the board, which meets just once a month. Are you angry yet? Let's make some noise. First, get the backstory from Chicago Sun-Times reporter Dan Mihalopoulos.

Head on over to this page and locate your representative in the Illinois Senate. Del Mar's appointment requires Senate confirmation

CALL SCRIPT:  Hello, my name is _________ and I am a constituent calling to ask about Senator ____'s position on recent nomination by the Governor. Governor Rauner has nominated Aaron Del Mar to sit on the Illinois International port District Board. I am very troubled by what I read in The Chicago Sun Times about Mr. Del Mar, and I do not think he is qualified for the job. I understand this position requires Senate confirmation. How does Senator _____ intend to vote on that position?

NOTES:

  • In case the staffer doesn't know what you are referencing, make sure they take down his name, the Illinois International Port District position, and the Dan Mihalopoulos article reference in The Chicago Sun Times.
  • Make sure the staffer takes down your name, location and contact information and request a formal response via email or letter.

Write a letter to the editor about Russian interference in the election

Letters to the editor (LTE) are a powerful tool. They have massive reach and can fight back against false media narratives or help to correct the record (check out this awesome LTE by member Karin which was just published

This week, we want to focus on the bipartisan calls for an investigation into Russian interference in the election. Click here to find a newspaper in your area.

TALKING POINTS:

  • The issue of Russian interference in the 2016 election isn't a partisan issue. Top Republican Senators including Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell have called for a full invesigation into the matter.
  • It is incredibly disturbing that President-elect Trump dismisses the assessments of the intelligence community out of hand (in fact, he refuses to even accept regular intelligence briefings because he claims "I'm a smart person").
  • Trump lost the popular vote, but is acting as if he has a mandate to not only govern in an extreme fashion, but that he has a mandate to ignore the facts as well.
  • As Republican Senator John McCain said this weekend, "the facts are there" when it comes to Russian meddling in our democracy. A full and transparent investigation is immediately required.

Investigate Trump's conflicts of interest

Rep. Jason Chaffetz is the Chairman of the Committee on Oversight and Government Reform in the U.S. House of Representatives.  As the minority party, Democrats can’t call official hearings, but they can call on their colleagues in the majority to do so and increase political pressure for an investigation.

And that's exactly what they're doing. Already, Rep. Elijah Cummings of Maryland, the panel’s ranking Democrat, has called for Rep. Chaffetz to initiate an investigation of Trump's massive conflicts of interests. Here's what he wrote:

“We have never had a president like Mr. Trump in terms of his vast financial entanglements and his widespread business interests around the globe,” Cummings wrote in a letter Monday. “Mr. Trump’s unprecedented secrecy and his extensive business dealings in foreign countries raise serious questions about how he intends to avoid conflicts of interest as president.”

Contact Rep. Chaffetz and add your voice to the call for an investigation.

Use Google to find your local paper's letter to the editor contact. Use our sample letter as a template to contact them about Donald Trump's horrible cabinet picks.

SAMPLE LETTER

As an avid reader of [add your newspaper name, e.g. The Daily Herald, The Chicago Sun-Times, etc.], I hope this paper does its due diligence when it comes to covering Donald Trump's disastrous cabinet nominees. Despite promising to bring the country together, Mr. Trump has clearly decided to pack his cabinet with divisive, unqualified candidates. Betsy DeVos, his pick for Secretary of Education, is a billionaire Republican donor with no education experience (no education degree, no school administrative experience and she's never even attended a public school). Senator Jeff Sessions, his pick for Attorney General, was denied a seat on the federal bench because of his racist comments. The list goes on and on. It's clear that the man who promised to surround himself with "the best people" has chosen instead to surround himself with the rich, the racist and the unqualified. I hope this paper gives a full airing to each candidate's record, so that our community may understand what is at stake. Thank you.

Contact Congress: Protest the appointment of white nationalist Steve Bannon

Steve Bannon is a white nationalist who has been appointed by Donald Trump to be his Chief Advisor in The White House. This is unacceptable.

CONTACT YOUR ILLINOIS ELECTED OFFICIALS AND DEMAND THEY ISSUE A STATEMENT CONDEMNING TRUMP'S APPOINTMENT OF BANNON AND CALLING ON HIM TO TELL BANNON "YOU'RE FIRED!"

Tips: Keep the call very short! Simply (1) ask if the office has issued as statement and (2) if not, explain how important it is for your representative to take a stand against having a white nationalist in the White House. Make sure they take down your name and zip code or location.

SAMPLE LETTER:

Dear Senator/Representative,

I am writing to request that you take a firm stand against the appointment of white nationalist Steve Bannon to any position in the Trump White House. Bannon's history of racist, misogynistic and bigoted statements and views is well-documented -- in fact, he built an entire website around the business of hate. Now more than ever, it is imperative that decent Americans take a stand against such hatred and make it clear that this is not acceptable in our country.

If you have not already done so, I urge you to immediately issue a statement condemning Bannon and calling on Trump to make clear that such extremists have no place in government.

Thank you.
