The Trump administration has rolled back a landmark Obama administration guideline which provided federal protection for transgender students. The guideline allowed students in public schools to "use bathrooms and facilities corresponding with their gender identity."
The Trump administration may be turning its back on LGBTQ students, but we can continue to fight for them on the local level.
WRITE TO YOUR LOCAL SCHOOL OR LOCAL SCHOOL DISTRICT
If you're in Illinois, you can look up your local school district website here.
I am writing to express deep dismay over the Trump administration's recent actions concerning transgender students. As you know, the Obama administration issued a joint guideline to federally funded schools urging them to allow transgender students to use facilities that correspond with their gender identity. In a shocking disregard for the well-being and safety of transgender students, the Trump administration has rescinded that guidance.
I hope [insert school district name] sides on the right side of history on this issue and continues to look out for the rights and protections of its transgender students. This is more than a simple bathroom issue. It is about standing up for some of our school's most vulnerable students during a complex time in their lives. It's about creating a positive, inclusive environment and teaching all of our children that hate and discrimination have no home anywhere -- not at school, not at home, not at work, and not in government.
I urge you to formally express your support for our school's transgender community and to assure them that they will continue to enjoy the protections and care every single student deserves.
CALL GOVERNOR RAUNER AND URGE HIM TO EXPRESS SUPPORT FOR TRANSGENDER STUDENTS
In New York, "the state Education Department and the state attorney general sent a reminder to all school districts saying they have "independent duties under state and local law to protect transgender students from discrimination and harassment." New York cannot stand alone in this. We must call on all governors to urge their education departments and attorney generals to issue similar statements of support.
If you're in Illinois, you may contact Governor Rauner here:

SCRIPT: "Hello, my name is X and I am an Illinois resident. I am calling to express my deep concern over the Trump administration's rollback of protections for transgender students in Illinois. Our state needs to show these students that we have their back. I urge the Governor to speak out on this issue and the direct his administration to issue statements of support for the transgender community. It should be the duty of every school in Illinois to protect all students, including transgender students, from discrimination and harassment. Thank you."
