So far, despite promises that massive ICE raids would only target "criminals" and "bad guys," The Washington Post reports that those without criminal records are being targeted as well:
The reports of seemingly random arrests, of ICE agents appearing during the day outside schools, shelters and apartment blocks, have sent a palpable wave of fear through the nation’s immigrant communities. “I have never seen the immigrant community, both the lawfully and unlawfully present, with a greater amount of fear than I have in recent weeks,” said Faye Kolly, an attorney in Austin.
CNN has reported on cases like that of Jeanette Vizguerra, a mother of 4, who will be deported, "potentially being forced to leave behind four children, the youngest just six-years-old."
1. CONTACT GOVERNOR RAUNER (or your state's governor) AND DEMAND THAT THEY REFUSE TO PARTICIPATE IN THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT'S UNPRECEDENTED AND ILL-ADVISED RAIDS AGAINST NON-CRIMINAL UNAUTHORIZED IMMIGRANTS
Gov. Rauner (Illinois)
SCRIPT: Hello, I'm a constituent, and I am calling to urge Governor Rauner to speak out against the Trump administration's raids against noncriminal unauthorized immigrants. Donald Trump's raids are tearing families apart, affecting U.S. citizens in our state and putting entire communities at risk. I expect our Governor to speak out against this and specifically, that he refuse to engage in any state and federal partnership agreement to enforce this horrible policy. Thank you.
2. WRITE A LETTER TO THE EDITOR ON REPUBLICANS KICKING DEMOCRATS OUT OF IMMIGRATION MEETINGS
Letters to the editor (LTE) are a powerful tool. They have massive reach and can fight back against false media narratives or help to correct the record (check out this awesome LTE by member Karin which was just published).
Yesterday, Rep. Luis V. Gutiérrez (D-IL) was "excluded from a meeting in the U.S. Capitol with Acting Director Thomas Homan of ICE. Rep. Gutiérrez was asked to leave the meeting by staffers for Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) at the request of Judiciary Chairman Bob Goodlatte (R-VA) and Speaker Ryan." Here is part of his statement:
In 20-plus years, I have never heard of the Republicans controlling what meetings Democrats can have with officials of the Executive Branch and never had a staffer ask me to leave a meeting to which I am entitled to attend. My constituents have questions about who is being targeted by ICE, which DREAMers with DACA they are targeting for deportation, which victims of domestic violence ICE is deporting, which immigrants at church shelters are being targeted. We know the statements by Trump about targeting criminals is a lie, but we were hoping someone could give us the truth or any information at all.
Donald Trump's immigration policy is just as chaotic as everything else in the White House since he took office.
Democrats are trying to hold the administration accountable, but Rep. Gutiérrez and others were kicked out of a meeting with ICE this week. That is outrageous.
ICE raids are rounding up not just criminals, but innocent people who are hard-working and contributing members of our society.
Trump thinks these raids make him look tough, but they are cruel and heartless..There is no dignity or reason in tearing families apart. Democrats are being kicked out of meetings with ICE officials, but the administration can't kick us out of the process. We are going to continue to speak up for what's right.
