ACTION: Investigate & Reject

This week, the Senate will begin confirmation hearings on Donald Trump's disastrous nominees. The Republican Party has chosen to ram through these nominees in a move the Office of Government Ethics has said is unprecedented, as many nominees have not submitted tax returns or have not have their conflicts of interest and backgrounds evaluated by the Office of Government Ethics. Let's do everything we can with the following goals:

  1. Making sure the public knows this process is NOT normal
  2. Getting the media to understand how the GOP is enabling Trump
  3. Encouraging a full vetting of these nominees so that the American people know that Trump isn't "draining the swamp" -- he's shockingly corrupt and is using the presidency to benefit himself and his billionaire buddies.

ACTION #1 - GIVE GOP MAJORITY LEADER A TASTE OF HIS OWN MEDICINE

In 2009, Senator Mitch McConnell sent a letter to then-Majority Leader Senator Harry Reid laying out what he called "common sense standards" for consideration of presidential nominees. Yep, here is the letter:

Send McConnell's 2009 words right back at him -- Tell the Senate Majority Leader to delay the hearings until his own "McConnell Standard" is met for each of Trump's nominees...using his exact letter from 2009!

GOAL: Pressure GOP to follow its own standards, get members of press to cover lower Trump standard
AUDIENCE TARGETED: Senate Majority Leader & Press
MEDIUM: Social media action (via Facebook)

*******************************

Dear Senate Majority Leader:

The Senate has the Constitutional duty to provide the Advice and Consent on Presidential nominations, a duty which both parties should take seriously. In 2009, you set forth a clear framework for consideration of presidential nominees. We urge you to reaffirm the commitment to conduct the appropriate review of these nominations, consistent with your previous position and the long standing and best practices of committees, regardless of which political party is in the majority. These best practices serve the Senate well, and we insist on their fair and consistent application.

Therefore, prior to considering any votes on any nominees, we expect the following standards will be met:

  • The FBI background check is complete and submitted to the committee in time for review prior to the hearing.
  • The Office of Government Ethics letter is complete and submitted to the committee in time for review and prior to a committee hearing.
  • Financial disclosure statements (and tax returns for applicable committees) are complete and submitted to the committee for review prior to the hearing.
  • All committee questionnaires are complete and have been returned to the committee. A reasonable opportunity for follow-up questions has been afforded committee members, and nominees have answered, with sufficient time for review prior to a committee vote.
  • The nominee is willing to have committee staff interviews, where that has been the practice.
  • The nominees has had a hearing.
  • The nominee agrees to courtesy visits with members when requested.
  • The nominee has committed to cooperate with the Ranking Member on requests for information and transparency.

These common sense standards and long standing practices will ensure that the Senate has had the opportunity to fairly review a nominee’s record and to make an informed decision prior to a vote.

Sincerely,

The American People

Trump & GOP Ram Through Nominees Without Basic Review

These days, you can’t get a job stocking shelves without undergoing a background check. Yet Donald Trump and the Republican Party are set to hold hearings and votes on Trump’s nominees without such a background check. The Office of Government Ethics has said that the hearings for “several nominees who have not completed the ethics review process is of great concern” and the rush to ram through the nominees without proper vetting has “left some of the nominees with potentially unknown or unresolved ethics issues shortly before their scheduled hearings.”

This historic disregard for basic review standards puts our nation at risk. Trump voters thought he would fix Washington — instead, he’s breaking with long-established precedent for vetting those entrusted with our nation’s highest responsibilities. Trump and his GOP enablers are making a mockery of our democracy. Shame on them all.
